Week #2 Elie’s South of the Border’s Steak Philly Sandwich

Elie’s South of the Border, 1951 Leech Avenue, Sioux City

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (“The City of Brotherly Love) is known for sports (The Phillies, the Eagles, the Flyers and the 76ers), music (it is the birthplace of Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Roots’ ?uestlove, after all) and, more importantly, its cheesesteak sandwiches.

Invented by Philadelphians Harry and Pat Olivieri (of Pat’s King of Steak fame) in the early 1930s, the Philly cheesesteak is thin slices of steak, served with sautéed onions and peppers, with a schmear of Cheez Whiz on a long Italian roll.

Bliss served simply and sizzling in a bun, right?

Well, over the years, the All-American Philly has gone upscale (Philadelphia’s Barclay Prime Steakhouse serves a $100 cheesesteak with Wagyu ribeye, foie gras, truffled Cheez Whiz on a fresh-baked sesame roll) and decidedly downscale (Steak-umms, anyone?)

Yet, Sioux City’s Elie’s South of the Border has a more southern spin on cheesesteak and, nope, we ain’t talkin’ South Philly, here!

The Tex-Mex eatery makes its cheesesteak using slivers of fajita-flavored meats, served with peppers, onions and gloppy, pale-white Provolone on a freshly-baked roll.

A canny combo of slightly spicy moo-meat plus grilled veggies and gooey cheese makes this Philly a real super Phreak!

Yeah, we know what you’re thinking. Isn’t it cracked (like the Liberty Bell) for a joint best known for its entomatada, tamales and chimichanga an odd place for such an East-of-the-Mississippi meal?

Probably, but Elie’s isn’t afraid of contradictions. Owned by the longtime cook of Ruth’s Cosina, this restaurant has bounced around a bit. Currently located on the second floor of an anonymous building east of Sioux City’s Stockyards, Elie’s isn’t easy to find. But once you find it, you’ll be charmed by its eclectic selection of menu items.

Who knows, maybe a Tex-Mex-inspired cheesesteak will have you bouncing around town like a punch-drunk Rocky Balboa?
