Six ways to make the most of Saturday in the Park

There are few greater events in Sioux City each year than Saturday in the Park, set for July 4.

Ranked as one of Iowa’s best free events each year, the day-long music festival features some of the nation’s top musicians, family rides, arts and great food. The best part – it’s still free.

There are many ways to experience this incredible event. Here are six ways to make the most of your experience.

  • Get there early and stake your claim. Since it’s the 25th year, it’s bound to be a big year. With the queen of soul as this year’s headliner, and a record number of sponsors, the quarter century mark is certainly set to be one for the record books. That means a record crowd. So get there early, pitch your blankets and set up your chairs and get ready to rock.
  • Appreciate the music, even if you don’t know it. It’s rare that any music fan knows all the bands in a given year at SITP. But every year there are musical surprises, newcomers and big names – all of them there to make memories on the Grandview Park stage. Make the most of it and cheer loudly, get into the groove and just enjoy the vibe of a beautiful day.
  • Be sun safe and stay hydrated. It goes without saying that there will be plenty of people who forget to slather themselves in sunscreen and bring extra water to stay hydrated. Remember, much of Grandview Park’s seating is in the sun for most of the day. Drink plenty of water, wear a good sun hat and bring extra sunscreen.
  • Eat early and often. Somewhere midday, it’s inevitable that the open spaces start to fill up and the lines at food vendors get longer. If you want to cut your wait times, get to your favorite foods early – ours include gyros, La Juanitas and BBQ – and enjoy the day on a full belly.
  • Too often people see the finale coming and leave the park to beat the traffic. What they are missing is the incredible fireworks show. Since it’s the 25th year and it falls on the 4th of July, this year’s show is guaranteed to impress. Stick around and enjoy a show you won’t soon forget.
  • Finally, sit back, relax and enjoy a day of sun, people watching, great music and the fact that Sioux City still hosts one of the top events Iowa has to offer. You’d have to travel a long way to find a free music festival with as big a names as SITP.
