This Week: Food, Art, and Cuban Music

We’ve got a very food-centric list of things to do this week in Sioux City, but only one of them requires eating.

Find out if Agriculture can save the planet.
Jack A. Bobo, senior advisor for biotechnology with the U.S. Department of State, will present a lecture on global food security issues at Morningside College Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. Bobo’s lecture – entitled “Can Agriculture Save the Planet Before it Destroys It?” – will focus on the challenges behind creating a sustainable agriculture system to feed the world’s rapidly growing population.

Learn how to reduce food waste.
Continuing on a theme of food, you can also attend a workshop on Food Waste Reduction, which will be held at Stoney Creek Inn on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Among the speakers will be Linda Scheid from Food Bank of Siouxland, and Fred Keston from the Iowa Waste Exchange, as well as speakers from the Iowa Waste Reduction Center. For a preview of the workshop, check out the video below.

Check out the Flames World Premier Gala.
LAMB Arts is doing something extra special for their 2013 BAAA-befit this week, as they show the World Premier of “Flames,” a new musical mystery authored by renowned playwright, Stephen Dolginoff. LAMB’s website gives a sneak peek for what’s in store: “From the moment you enter the theatre, be prepared to have a ball. Great food; beer and wine; silent auction; and for some added excitement, a LIVE auction with some truly fantastic items.” They also promise to have additional surprises throughout the evenings, which are October 17, 18, and 19, from 6:15 p.m. until 9:45 p.m.

Watch art and food collide.
Artlicious is an Epicurean showcase highlighting HyVee’s culinary talents with fabulous food displays and delicious tastings for all your holiday needs. Health-conscious to connoisseur – with every style of holiday celebration represented. Samples of premium wines and specialty beers will be available with suggested pairings for any cuisine. Check it out Thursday, October 17th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m at the Sioux City Art Center.

Meet the members of Tiempo Libre.
On Thursday, October 17th, KWIT Goes Cuban with the members of Tiempo Libre at Stoney Creek Inn from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., before their symphony performance. Tickets are only $20 each, and include two free drink tickets. You can also enjoy Cuban cuisine, salsa dancing, and, of course, music.
