Giving Tuesday an opportunity to give back at holidays

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day when non-profits turn to their online followers to help bolster their end-of-year giving initiatives.

The premise is simple: in light of all the holiday shopping days, there also should be a day of giving. Remember the old adage: ‘Tis better to give than to receive.

We’re big believers in that, and you should be, too.

So how can you help?

1. Find out if the charities you support are participating in this day of giving.

2. Check their website and social media channels for ways to give.

3. Share the initiative with your friends and family on social media to help spread the word.

How does the day actually benefit non-profits? Namely, it shines a light on the need for end-of-year giving, when many organizations have their greatest needs.

Cold weather, holiday costs and the need for extra winter clothing can increase costs for organizations who assist the needy. Civic organizations that serve the community may need to overcome a fund-raising shortfall.

Healthcare non-profits can experience an increased need for mental health, transportation and treatment, among many other things.

Regardless, Giving Tuesday gives community members an easy way to collectively support their not-for-profit contingent. And we couldn’t be more excited about it.

We hope you can support your favorite this year on Giving Tuesday.
