0Sculpt Siouxland expands presence downtown
In case you missed it, 10 new sculptures arrived this May in downtown Sioux City as part of the annual Sculpt Siouxland outdoor art display.
The sculptures, which mostly line Historic 4th Street, continue to multiply as new sculptures are added each spring and others retire to permanent locations around downtown.
A grant this year from the Gilchrist Foundation and the donations of many local businesses allowed Sculpt Siouxland to expand the number of artists submitting work to this competitive exhibition, which will be on display for a year.
In addition, the public will notice that a number of the sculptures in the Sculpt Siouxland collection have been moved to new locations. Most recently, Dr. James Busby’s El Toro – Angry Bull has been moved in front of the Sioux City Public Museum and Ken Peterson’s Hang Your Hat 3 is now in front of City Hall.
Lisa Kalaher, president of Sculpt Siouxland, said, “We are excited to announce that Sculpt Siouxland has already purchased one of the new sculptures, Rob Craig’s daredevil, for the Sculpt Siouxland collection. Craig, professor of sculpture at Drake University, is one of Iowa’s most highly regarded sculptors.” This sculpture is located on the south side of the Sioux City Art Center campus.
Art Center director Al Harris-Fernandez said, “We are proud to continue working with Sculpt Siouxland to keep this important program moving forward. Our goal is to make access to art as easy as possible and Sculpt Siouxland accomplishes this in a remarkable way.” Beginning now through Nov. 1, people can vote for their favorite new sculpture by picking up a ballot at the Sioux City Art Center, at Downtown Partners, or at two way-finding sites: one at the NW corner of Nebraska and 4th Street and another across from Promenade Theater. Completed ballots should be dropped off at the Sioux City Art Center during open hours. The winners will be announced during the week of Nov. 5.
Winning sculptors receive cash awards: one for People’s Choice and one for Children’s Choice. In addition to awarding cash prizes to winning sculptors, Sculpt Siouxland will award prizes to two voters by randomly drawing from the ballots. Children 14 and younger will be eligible for a $50 award, while voters 15 and older will be eligible for a $100 prize.
Group tours can be arranged by calling the Sioux City Art Center, 279-6272 ext.
