Tree Distribution Program will add some shade to Sioux City

In an effort to encourage Iowa homeowners to plant more trees, MidAmerican Energy Company and the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce are selling discount-priced trees now through Sept. 27.

The Plant Some Shade residential tree-planting program enables MidAmerican’s residential customers to purchase up to two, 6-to-8-foot landscaping trees for $30 each. Trees in MidAmerican’s Tree Distribution Program are sold only to residential customers who live in Iowa.

This year’s tree choices are sugar maple, hackberry, Littleleaf linden (shown above), swamp white oak, American hornbeam and Black Hills spruce. Advanced orders are required. Order forms can be obtained by visiting www.treesforsiouxland.net or www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa_plantsomeshade. Orders will be accepted until all trees have been sold.

The pre-ordered trees will be available for pick up from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Sioux City Explorers Park, 3400 Line Drive.

“Encouraging residents to plant trees in their yard is an effective way to reduce energy costs and also promote a healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment,” said Tina Yoder, MidAmerican Energy’s manager, energy efficiency.

“This is a great opportunity for homeowners to get a quality tree at an affordable price,” said Matt Brewer, forestry volunteer coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Fall is an ideal time to plant and establish new trees, too. The season’s warm days and cool nights are excellent for root growth.”

It’s also a great way to add some green to Siouxland.

For more information, contact Brewer at 515-242-6892 or the Chamber at 712-255-7903.
