Healthy Kids Day encourages families to get active, stay healthy

Kids have a fun opportunity to learn how to be healthy at the YMCA.

This Saturday, families and their children are invited to participate in Healthy Kids Day, a free party at the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA that promotes getting active.

“We want every child (and parent) to walk out with more ideas and inspiration on ways to get involved and stay active all summer,” said Chris DeRoin, the YMCA’s digital marketing and media coordinator, “new activities to try, new potential passions to explore, new places to go. And of course, enjoyment – sweaty and tired enjoyment from playing all afternoon at the Y!”

Healthy Kids Day activities will include field day activities, obstacle courses, bounce houses, sports challenges, human foosball, life-size games, and more.

The YMCA hopes to have a lot of families come down and learn how to be active in the summer.

“Ideally, we want to see thousands [of people],” said DeRoin, “with hundreds of families all having a blast. Our Halloween Spooktacular event at the Long Lines Family Rec Center drew approximately 2,100 [people] last October.”

Healthy Kids Day has been in the works for the last three months. DeRoin says the planning is never quite finished, though.

“Up until noon [when the event officially begins] we’ll still be running around coordinating volunteers and stations to make sure we provide a headache-free, fun experience for all attendees.”

DeRoin encourages everyone to stay active, even if they are unable to attend Healthy Kids Day.

“Just go outside and get moving,” he said. “Adventure will find you much easier if you’re not trapped in front of the TV or glued to a phone. So the key is planning and then actually making time to do something healthy or active – whatever it may be.”

Healthy Kids Day will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA on 601 Riverview Dr. in South Sioux City. It is free and open to the public.
