0Sculpt Siouxland Announces 8th Annual Celebration Fundraising Event!
It’s here! The 8th Annual Sculpt Siouxland Celebration will be held at the Sioux City Art Center from 6:30- 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2012! Held each year to honor the completion of the year-long Sculpt Siouxland exhibition while celebrating the beginning of a new outdoor sculpture exhibition, the Celebration offers a chance to mingle with the artists and friends while listening to live music. The evening concludes with a live auction of the sculptures from the outgoing exhibition. Tickets for this event are $40 which includes hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Tickets may be purchased at the Sioux City Art Center or at the door.
Sculpt Siouxland was started in 2005 by Sioux City Growth Organization (SCGO) members with the intention of promoting public art and increasing foot traffic in downtown Sioux City.
In 2008, SCGO members decided to open the project to the community by creating a stand-alone non-profit organization with the mission of engaging and educating the public to the potential of art in public spaces through exhibition, supporting materials and events. “The public is encouraged to experience each sculpture through individual viewing, hands-on interaction and guided tours,” said Sculpt Siouxland Board President Lisa Kalaher. Sculpt Siouxland members conduct tours of the exhibition on special dates throughout the year and as requests are received.
Sioux City’s Sculpt Siouxland has once again brought art from local artists to line our downtown space. It has been stated that areas with a cultural focus have more restaurants, stores and other businesses. These areas also have more foot traffic and stay open later; both factors leading to more money being spent in that area because people enjoy spending time in areas that have visual interest. Sculpt Siouxland is striving to achieve this for our downtown community.
With the support of the community and a partnership with the Art Center, Sculpt Siouxland has been able to focus on growing the exhibition in number and in size. The 2013-2014 exhibition has been selected to create a more dramatic effect in the downtown.
The sculptures are located along 4th Street from the Convention Center to Douglas Street, and on Nebraska Street between 3rd to 4th Streets. Participants come from across the upper Midwest to participate in this community project.
Each year Sculpt Siouxland purchases a sculpture for its Permanent Collection and invites the public to vote on the winners’ of its People’s Choice and Children’s Choice Awards. The recipients receive a cash award as well as being automatically approved for the next year’s exhibit.
While sculptures can be purchased at any time during the exhibit, the remaining sculptures are auctioned off at the annual Sculpt Siouxland Celebration. Proceeds from the celebration and the sales of sculptures help Sculpt Siouxland bring in quality sculptures for the exhibit and add to the permanent collection downtown.
