Uber seeking drivers in Sioux City
Uber is coming to Sioux City, and is seeking people interested in being drivers for the app-driven taxi-like service.
Today from 1-8 p.m. the car service will be meeting with potential drivers at the Holiday Inn, 701 Gordon Dr., to talk about getting started with the driving service. Interested drivers are welcome to sop by and visit with an Uber representative, who will be on hand to answer questions through the day.
So what is Uber and how does it work?
The car service is driven by a smartphone app. Riders download the app, and can then request a ride from cars near them. The driver is notified, confirms the job and picks up the rider.
Drivers in cities across the world drive their own cars, pick up and deliver riders on their own schedule, and get paid weekly by Uber, who takes a cut of all ride fees charged.
All riders enter their credit card information into the Uber app, so all fees are charged immediately after a ride is completed. Riders can then rate drivers and request them specifically in the future.
Uber started in 2009 and is based in San Francisco. It currently operates in 58 countries and 300 cities across the globe, according to Wikipedia. There are currently around 175,000 drivers.
Driving opportunities for Uber drivers now include taxis, limos, heavy trucks, buses and courier services, among others, according to the company’s website.
Requirements for each vary widely and can change depending on the company and city you choose. To drive with Uber, you’ll need a car that is either 2000 or newer, depending on your city. You’ll also need to pass a background check, and have a personal license and registration plus be at least 21 years old.
