052 Sandwiches: Hard Rock’s Reuben Ramone has attitude
Can you indulge your inner anarchist by eating a classic deli sandwich?
That was our thought process, chomping down on a Reuben Ramone at Hard Rock’s Fuel American Grill recently.
Like many of Fuel’s signature menu items, this sandwich – piled high with sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, tangy Russian dressing and sauerkraut served on grilled Marble rye – was named after legendary rock icons.
For instance, the fast-casual restaurant’s peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich is called the “Hot Elvis” and the meatloaf sandwich is named after the king of “Bat Out of Hell.”
Similarly, Fuel’s Reuben bore the name of the punk rockers who called Queens, New York home.
Let me tell you a quick story: My family got HBO when I was in elementary school and the first movie that I saw on the premium net was 1978’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” featuring P.J. Soles, Clint Howard and, you guessed it, The Ramones!
This cult comedy quickly became my favorite movie and the band behind such hits as “Teenage Lobotomy,” “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg” quickly became the soundtrack to my fifth grade self.
Hell, even today, I’d rank “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” in my top 50 all-time flicks!
This memory was racing through my mind when I took my first bite from the sandwich inspired by the rage-filled insanity of Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and rest of the Ramones.
Could the Reuben Ramone live up to the hype?
Indeed, it could.
Many restaurants have tried to make a classic Reuben but most have failed.
They’ll either try too hard to reinvent the wheel or they’ll skimp on the ingredients.
Luckily, Fuel does neither.
Instead, they serve you the legendary sandwich the way it should be made: piled high, full of flavor, with plenty of attitude.
Hey, kinda like the Ramones … now I get it!
Sometimes, being a rebel simply means being yourself.
Whether you’re a grade school punk or someone who still wears a leather jacket listening to “Rockaway Beach” in the middle of summer, Fuel’s Reuben Ramone will make you scream like a freakin’ banshee!
