052 Weeks, 52 Sandwiches – Soho’s Meatloaf Griller
This is the first week of Sioux City Now’s series 52 weeks, 52 Sandwiches. Check back every Wednesday to see what sandwich we have next.
Step 1. Grab a piece of bread. Step 2. Throw some random stuff on it. Step 3. Top it off with another piece of bread.
That constitutes the making of a sandwich, right?
Well, not exactly.
There are some Siouxland restaurants that have taken the art of the sandwich to a higher level and, for the next year, we’ll be spotlighting a different sandwich every week.
Yup, that means we’ll be sampling 52 sandwiches in the next 52 weeks.
Will all of them be a typical meat & veggie combo? No, we’ll include a few sandwiches for our non-carnivore friends as well.
Can a burger ever be considered a sandwich? Hell to the yeah! And so can tortas, bahn mi and pupusa.
You see, Sioux City has a wide variety of food options and we want to take you on a culinary tour, one sandwich at a time!
Week #1 Soho’s Meat Loaf Griller
Soho Kitchen & Bar, 1024 Fourth Street, Sioux City
“Just like mom used to make” doesn’t always sound like such a ringing endorsement, since mom’s mac & cheese often came from Kraft, her soup from a can and several of her signature dishes came from boxes that had “Helper” in big, block letters.
Having said that, Soho Kitchen & Bar has a meatloaf sandwich that tastes like your mom’s, if only she had more prep time.
Sticking a grilled brick of chopped steak between two pieces of white bread may not sound like the most appetizing of meals, yet Soho’s gourmet take on the old school meatloaf sandwich works on a nostalgic level as well as a culinary one.
First, Soho’s Meat Loaf Griller is a perfect meal for a winter’s night, as satisfying today as it was when you were a kid.
From a foodie perspective, using fresh, never frozen beef is a way Soho owner Julie Schoenherr is able to reconstruct an All-American favorite. Is Soho’s Meat Loaf Griller teeming with out-of-this-world flavors? No, it’s a meatloaf sandwich, after all. Will it give you an appetite for a less-hectic time? Absolutely, even if your mom’s meatloaf tasted more like ketchup than it did chopped steak!
