Pets of the Week – Toto and Dorothy – ADOPTED!

This summer we received a call from a kind woman named Megan about stray dogs in Homer, Nebraska. She said two little dogs were living in the cornfield behind the Pronto gas station. They had been there for days and would come out to eat and then go right back into the field. Nobody could catch them.

We sent a volunteer team to the rescue. Dorothy went into the trap first while Toto watched from afar. Then one of the volunteers held Dorothy on her lap, talking to her and letting her know everything was okay, and before long Toto crept up very slowly to the volunteer and she got a leash on him. We thought they were going to be feral, but they were just afraid.

Dorothy and Toto are Cairn/Irish Terrier mixes, about a year old. Both were very thin and appeared to have been at large for quite some time. At first they were extremely shy around people, but they have gradually warmed up. Now they like nothing better than to sit on the sofa and snuggle.

Living behind the gas station taught them to love “dumpster diving,” and so human food is a big temptation for them. In their foster homes, they are learning to like dog food, but it will take some training to keep them away from human treats. Dorothy and Toto are very smart and eager to please, so it should not be difficult to train them. Small children frighten both of these dogs, especially Toto, and we recommend a home that does not have children under the age of 10.

Both of these cuties have been spayed/neutered, they have all of their shots and are micro chipped. Our adoption fee is $135 each. You can apply to adopt Dorothy or Toto (or both) at our website, or call Deanna at 712-253-8394.

Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. We rescue the underdogs: the old, the sick and injured, the used-up by breeders, the forsaken and misunderstood. We nurse them, bring them back from the brink, and give them another chance. We believe they make the very best pets because somehow, they understand and are grateful.
