0Awesome flavor, big portions make Kylie Q’s perfect BBQ
I was out for a bike ride this weekend with my daughter and stopped in at Kylie Q’s BBQ for lunch, and boy was I glad I did.
We could barely escape the sweet scent of spiced meat wafting from the big smoker on the back of Jason Hamer’s portable BBQ trailer.
Located most Saturdays at the intersection of 28th and Myrtle streets, Hamer said business has been great this summer. This weekend, you will have to find him at Bronson Days, and each week, he announces his location on Facebook. but the 28th and Myrtle parking lot is his base most Saturdays.
Hamer started his business humbly, and has since grown to include catering, a bottled BBQ product and his regular Saturday stints selling from the smoker trailer. A line of customers were queued up Saturday when we arrived around 1 p.m.
We ordered the wings and a Brisket sandwich with cole slaw on the side.
As a big fan of smoked brisket, this sandwich was more of a challenge of Hamer’s abilities than it was a test of my taste buds. I’ve eaten brisket at nearly every BBQ joint I’ve been to, as I think it’s a great arbiter of how well the smoker knows his craft. Or maybe I just love brisket.
Either way, the Kylie Q’s gang piled the sandwich high with beef on a huge bun. I got to choose from three of their different BBQ sauces – traditional, sweet or a habanero hot sauce. I chose the hot sauce, which turned out to provide a nice heat, but wasn’t so hot that it was unbearable.
Too often, hot sauces go more for the burn than for the flavor. Kylie Q’s gets it right with a smooth, hot sauce that was the perfect complement to the layers of smoky, tender brisket. Jason told me that on occasion he does feature a really hot hot sauce.
I put a healthy portion of sauce on my sandwich before I started, then dug in. I ate the first half with just sauce and meat, then added the cole slaw to my sandwich for the second half to add a cool, saucy contrast. This ended up being the perfect pair on the ample bun. Kylie Q’s brisket is bar none one of the best I’ve had in years.
The wings we had were, according to my daughter, “delicious and amazing.”
In fact, she’s about right on. They were moderately messy, with a smoky sweet flavor. We doused them in more sweet sauce which made them the perfect starter.
I would have tried the beans and pulled pork sandwich, too, but instead decided to leave something to look forward to on my next stop.
