0Music Against Violence to spotlight domestic violence
Tonight, music fans can support a great cause and enjoy a night of great music too.
The Council on Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence is marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October with an event they’re calling Music Against Violence. The show starts at 8 p.m. at the Chesterfield, and is just $5. Musicians scheduled to perform include Kelsey Marie Dill, Elsa Va Music, Black Death Jet Set, The Clutch and Lil Red & the Medicated Moose Band playing.
CSADV assists victims of Domestic Assault and their children, and victims of sexual assault. Don’t miss an opportunity to see some great music and support a great local cause.
We talked with Jeremy Pigg, Community Development Specialist for CSADV about the event.
Question: Tell me about the Music Against Violence event – how it started and what it is aimed at achieving.
Answer: Music Against Violence is a concept that was started by a supporter of the Council Against Sexual Abuse and Domestic Violence (CSADV), Casey Weidler.
The aim is to raise awareness about the issue of Domestic Violence and to raise funds for CSADV.
Q: Tell me about the connection between music and violence.
A: There’s no direct correlation. This is just a way for us to get this important issue in front of a younger audience
and to raise awareness.
Q: How can the average person help fight domestic violence?
A: Be informed about the issue. One in four women will experience abuse in their lifetime. So I ask everyone to think about the women
in their lives. You KNOW someone that has or will experience abuse. In this country, a women is abused every 9 seconds.
And it’s also important to know that there are resources and support out there.
CSADV is available 24 hours a day. And we are extremely confidential. Our advocates will respond in person at the hospital
or the police station within 30 minutes 24 hours a day.
CSADV is also looking for volunteers. We have an extensive training program to train our volunteers into advocates
so that you can directly help those in crisis. Our crisis line is 24-7-365 and you can reach us by calling 800-982-7233.
Q: This is a benefit for CSADV. What does the money go toward?
A: Monies raised go toward our services and those in shelter. Often times these families flee with nothing but what they
are wearing. They need clothes, tranportation to and from appointments to the doctor, legal fees, etc.
Q: Domestic Violence Awareness Month is aimed at shedding light on an important topic. What other events are happening this month in Siouxland?
A: On Oct. 5, the mayor will issue a proclamation declaring Domestic Violence Awareness month for the City; on Oct. 6
the County Board of Supervisors will be doing the same on the county level and throughout the month, we’re encouraging men
to wear purple ties (the color of DV Awareness month) and encouraging men to talk about the issue, get more informed and help
us fight domestic violence.
