0Shrimp and fish tacos done right
By Yasamoto
Yeah, yeah, yeah, repent, sacrifice, lather, rinse and repeat!
In the middle of Lent, you’re probably tired of any fish that comes with prefix of “Mc.”
Well, we can’t say that we blame ya. Despite the season, typical fish sandwiches don’t really trip our trigger either.
As a one-week break from our salute to stuff to cram into bread, we will not be sampling a sandwich. Instead, we will be going south of the border to shovel in some amazing seafood – shrimp and fish tacos to be exact.
And few places do a better job with their sea-bearing tacos than downtown’s Taqueira El Maguey.
Situated in a simple storefront at 525 Pearl St., this authentic Mexican restaurant is owned by Omar Rivera and Eduardo Sanchez (a veteran cook at La Juanita).
Since Taqueria El Maguey is, you guessed it, a taqueria, it has 10 different types of meat to stuff one’s taco. Yet the specialty of the house happens to be its mild white fish taco and the succulently sweet shrimp taco.
Both are served in handmade corn tortilla shells and come teeming with sautéed onions, avocado, mouth-watering cilantro and a kickin’ salsa.
For Lent, either one can be considered a form of Divine Intervention.
Are we ready to repent? Um … no.
But Taqueria El Maguey may put us on our knees in order to pray for another six weeks of Lent.
