Taste test: New liquor promises to stimulate the libido
You’d think that a drink named Libido Libations would be an easy sell.
I mean how often are alcohol and sex cobbled together in marketing images? This time out, however, it’s right in the product name and it’s made by Penthouse.
The challenge, however, is taking a well-known liquor and from that delivering a product that promises to stimulate the libido. In red and blue bottles “Fashioned for Her” and “Crafted for Him,” the two drinks are supposed to transform consumers into another world.
If not, their names are sure to spark the imagination of young drinkers captivated by what’s in the bottle, or who are curious about the Penthouse brand.
So we set out to sample these libations, and see if we could determine what makes them different. We hit up Mick at the Chesterfield, one of the few places in Sioux City selling the drinks.
First off, both of these drinks are cherry vodka, but we knew there had to be more to it. Their bottles proclaim the following: Expertly formulated, the Female Libido Libation uses only the safest, highest quality natural herbs and is powered by Penthouse, the leader in quality entertainment and trusted source for sexual satisfaction. The men’s bottle says the same thing.
Not many clues there about what gives it its signature power. Sounds like a heavy reliance on the Penthouse name.
What’s it taste like? To be sure, it does not taste like all natural herbs.
Basically, it tastes exactly like cherry vodka, which tastes kind of like a Jolly Rancher. We had a mixed drink that included lemonade and Libido Libations over ice. It was a sweet drink for a warm day, but in no way hindered our ability to keep our pants on. We did stop at 2 drinks, which may have been the problem.
We’re willing to admit that this drink, which the promo materials say is “Perfect for a night of fun or an afternoon of excitement,” likely will create some libido lovers. But our hunch is that the alcohol itself gets much of the credit.
Penthouse recommends other drinks, including:
- “The Sex Appeal” which adds orange and cranberry juice
- the “Cherry Buster shot”, which includes sweet and sour and grenadine
- and the “Panty Dropper”, which is pretty much the same thing as the shot.
Like any liquor, there are myriad options for what you can create – you just have to be curious.
Final thoughts: There may be a libidinous link to those herbs and the cherry vodka, but we didn’t discover it during our sampling. Like any new introduction into the liquor world, there will be lovers and haters of these new products.
