0Week Ahead: A Drive-in Movie, Chili Cookoff and a Jazz Reunion

Jimmie “JJ” Walker is best known for his appearance on the television show Good Times, which ran from 1974 to 1979. While on the show, Walker’s character was known for the catchphrase “Dy-no-mite!” Walker now tours the country, bringing laughs to crowds everywhere. Find him Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City. Show starts at 8 p.m.
Chili Cookoff
Hot chili and fresh salsa are the order of the day Saturday for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland Chili and Salsa cookoff. Cooking is slated for a 7 a.m. start time in Battery Park at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Public tasting and the live band begins at 11:00 a.m. There also will be a Kid’s zone and a local celebrity Dunk Tank. Tickets on sale at all area Hy-vee stores.
Race for Hope
Nylen Cancer Center’s Race for Hope is one of the longest running runs in Siouxland. Don your running shows and get ready to run on Saturday at the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. Warmup and welcoming activities start at 7:30 a.m. and the first race begins at 8:30. Whether you’re running in honor of someone you know or just to support the cause, be there and show your support!
Drive in theatre
Want a fun throwback event? Then head to the Missouri River Boat Club’s Drive in Movie night Saturday, featuring the film American Graffiti. The movie will start at dusk with the Honeymooners and I Love Lucy to help get everyone started. Come by boat, by car, by motorcycle, or by foot. We will have 2 big screens set up. It’s free.
Jazztown Reunion featuring Patricia Barber
Join Vangarde Arts as they celebrate Sioux City’s history as a booming Jazz Town with two nights of great live Jazz! Friday it’s the Student Jazz Jam from 6-8 p.m., followed by the Justin Kisor Combo. Then on Saturday, it’s an evening with jazz great Patricia Barber, who will perform 8 and 9:30 pm sets! Friday is a freewill donation and Saturday is $25 in advance!
