RAGBRAI overnight towns announced Saturday
This Saturday, hundreds of cyclists will converge on Des Moines to find out if their town will be an overnight host of the 2016 RAGBRAI bicycle ride.
The 44th annual event, which stands for (Des Moines) Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, is July 24-30. The ride draws about 10,000 riders from across Iowa and the nation, and typically covers about 500 miles, traversing Iowa from west to east. More than 20,000 people will participate in all.
The ride started in Council Bluffs in 2013, in Rock Valley in northwest Iowa in 2014, and Sioux City in 2015. If tradition holds, it’s likely that a central city – such as Onawa or Missouri Valley – or southwest Iowa city will be the starting point.
But, like every RAGBRAI route announcement, we won’t know until Saturday night, as the folks who oversee the event are tight-lipped about the much-heralded distinction of being a host town, even if it is only one day a year. Watch the video below to see what we mean.

The announcement will be made during a live event by TJ Juskiewicz, Des Moines Register RAGBRAI director, and will be streamed live on RAGBRAI.org.
The complete RAGBRAI route will be announced by the organization’s committee in March.
