0Local Officials to Visit Japanese Sister City
Mayor Bob Scott and City Manager Paul Eckert will travel to Tokyo and Yamanashi City, Japan next week to visit economic development prospects and meet with officials from our sister city, Yamanashi City. The brief, 4 day work trip will focus on economic development opportunities and include meetings with staff from the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
This visit will also celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the sister city exchange between Sioux City, Iowa and Yamanashi City, Japan. Activities during the visit will include a 10th Anniversary Ceremony, meetings with the Yamanashi City Mayor and City Council, representatives from various government departments, school Superintendent and Board of Education members, International Exchange Committee, as well as visits to an elementary school, agricultural industries, and the University of Yamanashi.
A meeting with Wade Binneboese, an English teacher from Sioux City, who is teaching English as a second language in Yamanashi City, is also planned. Sioux City has sent an American English Language Teacher to Yamanshi City, Japan to teach students since 2003.
A local delegation from Morningside College and Sioux City Community Schools Superintendent Paul Gausman will join the 10th Anniversary celebration in Yamanashi City and stay several additional days to meet with Morningside alumni and strengthen the student and teacher exchange programs and new agricultural food studies major.
Next week’s visit marks the second time city officials have traveled to Japan since the formal relationship began in 2003. Sioux City has hosted four delegations from Yamanashi City during the same time, most recently in August 2012.
