Noah’s Hope: Fences

I’m On the Fence About That…

In a perfect world, a dog would never wander away from home and get lost, or worse, get injured in some unspeakable way. But alas, this is not a perfect world. Therefore a leash law is a good way to keep your pooches safe while you are strolling with them, but how about the day-to-day potty thing?

It is very convenient to open a door and let Rufus out into a fenced yard. However, some communities forbid fencing a yard or it is just not practical to fence others. An underground fence can be a great choice for these situations. Most dogs learn the boundaries quickly and you can be assured that Fido will stay home. What many people don’t consider with an underground fence, though, is that it will not keep stray dogs OUT! Little Fifi might not wander away, but will she be safe from the big scary dog that is roaming the neighborhood?

When considering tethering vs. fencing it is very important to keep in mind the personality of the dog. Some dogs are so happy go lucky that they are perfectly fine without a fenced yard or maybe being tied out is all they have ever known. Some dogs jump every fence they meet so they have to be tethered. Then there are some whose spirit is absolutely crushed and they become depressed and lethargic. They react as if they are being punished for some mighty crime. Oddly, there are even some dogs that won’t go potty if they are tied up. A foster-based rescue like Noah’s Hope knows which dogs would do best in a fenced yard and which would be just as happy without. If you apply to adopt a dog from Noah’s Hope, you won’t be denied because you don’t have a fenced yard, however, we might steer you away from dogs that wouldn’t be a good fit for you.

So, to fence or not to fence, that is the question. No matter what your situation is, the ultimate goal is to keep Fido and Fifi safe. Obviously, having a fence is not mandatory to be a dog owner but it does make life a lot easier.

Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. We rescue the underdogs: the old, the sick and injured, the used-up by breeders, the forsaken and misunderstood. We nurse them, bring them back from the brink, and give them another chance. We believe they make the very best pets because somehow, they understand and are grateful.
