Foot-powered bus ride promotes fitness to Sioux City students

A very different school bus – the Walking School Bus – shuttled Liberty Elementary School students to the Sioux City school this month.

On May 17, we caught up with them to take the walk to school.

Students from across their near west side neighborhood gathered in the morning with school volunteers, then played games and waited for the bus to depart.

This foot-powered walking bus included students walking together along a pre-established route. Many of them touted signs that read “Walking School Bus,” and enjoyed conversation with teachers and friends as they walked.

The event was aimed at promoting exercise, healthy lifestyles good health through physical activity. The event will be continued this fall at other schools around Sioux City.

Last week, as students completed their walk, one lucky student won a new bicycle. With that new bike, she might not need a bus ride any more.
