052 Sandwiches: Deep-fried chicken sandwich is food for soul
I’ve just come to the realization that there’s been a serious lack of deep-fried food in my diet.
That thought came to me when I was inhaling a humungous chicken sandwich at Red Bones Café recently.
The sandwich – made at Sioux City’s sole soul food restaurant – consists of a deep-fried boneless chicken breast plopped between two pieces of liberally-buttered white bread.
The meal is accompanied by a batch of Red Bones’ French fried potatoes, along with a few pickles.
Is this a healthy meal? To paraphrase the late Whitney Houston, “Hell to the Naw!”
But is it good? “Hell to the Yeah!”
Which is what we’ve come to expect from the cuisine of Red Bones’ owner Sarah Dean and head cook Robert Ford.
Make no bones about it, the Red Bones Café is unlikely to secure any Blue Zones certification or win any trendy awards for light, innovative meals.
Instead, the 401 West Seventh St. hole-in-the-wall specializes in old-school Southern cuisine that sticks to your ribs and, one would, imagine, the walls of your esophagus.
When you walk into the ultra-casual Red Bones, also remember to scarf down their legendary deep-fried catfish or fried chicken, accompanied by such so-bad-they’re-good sides as mac & cheese, cheesy corn or black-eyed peas.
Then you top things off with a homemade piece of Red Velvet or lemon or caramel cake to send your internal organs into ecstasy.
For the most part, I exercise, watch what I eat and try to lead an active lifestyle. I do this because it’s important to me.
Yet, there are times when I want to indulge in food that is rich, decadent and full of flava! And the fried chicken sandwich delivers.
On top of the door at Red Bones Café is a sign that says “Food for the soul.” That pretty much sums up the appeal of the place.
Food isn’t just designed for sustenance. Instead, it’s also meant to make us feel good, feel alive and feel soulful.
And sometimes, it takes a greasy chicken sandwich to really experience that soulful experience.
