Fusion from Down Under at the Vangarde Friday

Peter Harper and his band are one of the most unique and sought after Blues artists on tour today.

His World Fusion Blues, which includes the band the Midwest Kind, combines the traditional art of the didgeridoo with masterful harmonica and vocals to create a mesmerizing and fun night of world music.

The Australian musician has been touring on and off for years, playing small town haunts and blues festivals. Additionally, the band has been working relentlessly with Big Sky Recording Studio in Ann Arbor, Mich., recording a new  CD, which the bands plans to release in February.

Born in the United Kingdom, Harper’s musical journey began early, performing in brass bands playing the trumpet and euphonium. At the age of 10, his family moved halfway round the world to Perth, Western Australia, and his Grandfather introduced him to the harp. In Perth, one of the most isolated cities in the world, there was a thriving blues and folk scene. The blues had a rawness, an honesty and a passion of the soul which spoke to Harper deeply. Then, like every blues lover, Harper began his journey backwards to discover the deeper roots of the music.

Harper has won numerous awards in his home country of Australia, as well as awards from around the globe, including Canada, Detroit and the UK, including Male Vocalist of the Year at the Australian Blues Awards in 2004.

Prior to his introduction to American audiences, Harper released six albums to great acclaim in his homeland of Australia. He received a Gold Record for “Sailing Australia” (America’s Cup Theme). Harper had the honor of backing Blues Legend “Muddy Waters” on harmonica for his West Australian tour. In 1994 he moved to Melbourne, Victoria, and released his first album, “Tears of Ice”(New Market). And he’s continued on release music ever since.

Expect a raucous night of blues, jamming and fun from this outfit. Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Vangarde Arts.

Tickets only $10 in advance! Call 712-251-6432 or stop by Vangarde at 420 Jackson!
