Museum announces children’s summer programming

(Sioux City) – A new partnership with NASA is among the highlights of the Sioux City Public Museum’s summer programming beginning June 4. Reservations are required for most summer programs.

“NASA approached the Sioux City Public Museum about partnering on a new curriculum they were developing,” said Theresa Weaver-Basye, curator of education. “We will be given a kit of material and have a site visit from NASA staff.”

The NASA-sponsored, STEM-based curriculum highlighting human space exploration will be the focus of the all-new “NASA Spaceflight Explorers Camp” for children ages 10 and up. The curriculum will also be featured in the Space session of Kid’s Thursdays on July 11.

Along with on the “NASA Spaceflight Explorers Camp” on July 23-25, returning favorites for children ages 7-9 years are “Dinosaur Camp” June 4-6 and “Cooking Camp” June 18-20. The camps are held Tuesdays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon. Each camp costs $40 for members and $45 for nonmembers with a snack provided.

“Kid’s Thursdays” return on the second and fourth Thursdays in June and July from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Families are invited to explore theme-based activity centers featuring hands-on learning. Along with the Space theme, other themes are Dinosaur Day on June 13, Gone Fishing on June 27, and The Farm on July 25. The cost for each child is $1 per session. Pre-registration is not required.

One-hour classes are also available for a cost of $5 for members and $6 for nonmembers. Classes for 4 to 6 year olds will feature a different book with coordinating activities. A Victorian Tea Party for ages 7 to 10 will be held at the Peirce Mansion on Wednesday, June 12 with a choice of morning or afternoon sessions.
